Workshops and Lectures
Workshops both in person, via videolink and new for 2021, the Help4Dancers App.
A proactive approach for dancers to become mentally fit and emotionally strong
My interactive Mental Health, Self-Care Workshops are created for performing arts students from the age of 13 through to professional performers. They are also suitable for those working with performers, coaches, teachers, physical therapists, dance science students and also the parents of students and can be presented in person or via video link.
The talks cover recognising mental health symptoms and how they relate to performers by looking at typical underlying factors and triggers. Break-out groups allow attendees to explore subject such as their relationship with food, perfectionism, social media influences and body image to enable them to see if these issues are affecting them.
A discussion regarding the relationship between mental health and injuries is also included; this can help with both recovering from and avoiding future injuries.
Participants learn a variety of simple techniques to help them in all aspects of their performing life. Due to the subject matter, I also offer a few short, confidential one-to-one sessions after each workshop if required.
Workshops run for between one and a half to two hours, with an additional time for one-to-ones mentioned above, if required.
A 1 hour workshop is also available specifically dealing with performance, audition and exam anxiety. Other tailor made workshops can be discussed with the school/company.
I present dance science talks and in 2019 I was invited to speak at the International Association of Dance Medicine Science (IADMS) regional meeting in Edinburgh, Scotland in March 2019. In September 2020, I will be presenting a talk at the RAD Centenial Conference, “Mapping Dance and Dance Teachers: Past(s), Present, and Future(s)”. Due to COVID-19, this has now been put back to 2021.
I am a guest lecturer at the University College London (UCL) on their Performing Arts Medicine MSc course and presented this in March 2019 and again in March 2020.
